Post Cards Of Naval Heros
It is well known that America in the early days had an unhealthy dependence on coastal forts instead of naval vessels. Therefore we have too few naval heros. These cards come from larger series of American portraits. John-Paul Jones was our first naval hero and is still one of our best known.

New forms of Water Power

Robert Fulton is generally credited with the invention of the steamboat. His first steamships' successful voyage was in 1807 but by then at least many steam vessels had already been launched in America. Author Donald Shomette quotes an account of a steam packet boat in 1795 on the Chesapeake Bay. He also says there was a steamboat on the potomac at Washington in 1810.
